I am aware that this has absolutely nothing to do with guild leadership or MMORPGs but Dresden linked this to me and I thought it was awesome. Japan has brought us some amazing food, video games, and cultural insanity. This is more of option three! Check out this video after the jump! Whoever this young woman is she has awesome skills! 38 Studios may not be on the radar for the average MMORPG player yet. They’ve been extremely guarded in sharing information so that player expectations are not set too high. They are the unintentional masters of hype through no hype! After today I imagine they will no longer be relatively unknown. After today tons of players will be able to see and appreciate them like a few of us have for a while. At Comic Con 38 Studios Big Huge Games announced Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Reckoning is a single player game that takes place in the same universe as the Copernicus Project. Thus far details are limited but I know that will change rapidly. The trailer after the jump! It is always of great interest to me when I visit forums and read about what other players want out of MMORPGs. It does a lot to make me realize that I represent an ancient, out of date MMO philosophy. Some of the design features that players point out I fully understand. Others confuse me to no end. The one I’m talking today is the request for “no gear grind” at the end game. That is just something I don’t understand. Either I don’t get the meaning or I have an extremely different view of what an MMORPG is. Continue reading →
Last Friday our podcast turned 22 for the second time. The Multiverse is a fickle child and does not always want to celebrate it’s birthday. Just like the original show 18, the first show 22 is lost to the void of history. Instead we bring you the new episode 22! It was refined, polished, gussied up and trotted out for you to whistle at. We discuss up coming MMORPGs and give our explanations on why we will or will not play them. Chris and I also go nutty over Legos. Continue reading →
I chat a lot about class balance. I fully believe that it is one of the most important aspects of an MMORPG. These days developers and players just don’t seem to think so. The notion that a lot of shops use a single person to handle this aspect of design and that it is generally on an extremely long cycle blows my mind. Someone needs to take this problem by the horns and wrangle it. We need small incremental updates monthly with clear defined goals! There should be no mystery about what your class does and where it should be. To aid in this I’ve made a chart. Continue reading →
I’ve done extensive writing about how to recruit for a guild. I’ve also spent a lot of time discussing it with Karen on a View from the Top. It is always funny how giving advice is a lot easier than actually putting it into practice. I’ve been recruiting for Iniquity lately and that has refreshed my perspective a bit. Times have changed a little bit since the last time I did this sort of work and I thought I’d take a look at what is working for me. Continue reading →
