As usual with my work schedule going full blast I’m a little behind on the news but I did read something extremely interesting on EQ2 Wire just now. It seems SOE has finally created a EQ2 mobile application for the iPhone and other smart platforms! I wonder who suggested doing this a long while back! I just finished downloading the application and poking at all the features and have to say this is exactly what I was talking about.
EQ2 mobile really didn’t spare on the features. From your cell phone you’re able to log into your account and view your character. SOE created both an in-game avatar and inventory screen that looks exactly like that of the full client. I was able to look at Ferrel and all of her gear. Never again will I ask myself if I have current tier armor or not while at work (don’t judge)! I can fire up my app and just look. You can also get the full statistics of your items to answer those pesky questions like “how much haste does the flowing black silk sash have again?”
Beyond being simply informative EQ2 mobile also allows you to have interactions with EQ2. Your in-game mails are available for you to view and also send. You can tell who is online (so you can avoid people!) and send messages to chat channels. I haven’t been able to extensively test the chat features yet but I did fire off a few messages into guild chat.
I would say that on the whole the application scores very high on features. With the exception of not being able to shop the auction house you can pretty much do everything you’d expect to be able to do on a phone within EQ2. Where EQ2 mobile suffers a little bit is in presentation. The menu system is a bit convoluted and not easily navigated. It can also be slighting confusing. I’m still not 100% sure I’m chatting correctly with guild chat. Frequently the top bar will flash “you have a new message” without any indication of where it is. Clicking at it does nothing. I think some simplification and streamlining would go a long way! That said, EQ2 mobile was released yesterday. I’m going to cut it some slack! Can I see myself using this in the future? Absolutely yes! The features I want and need are there.
