Heroes of Might and Magic Online

Ratonga Shadow KnightAs I am now apparently a prisoner in Europe thanks to our friend the Volcano I’ve been spending more time than usual browsing the internet for fun. I was surprised to find out that one of my favorite franchisees, Heroes of Might and Magic, is getting the MMO treatment. This is not exactly a title that lends itself well to that genre but I can see the appeal. The player could have a permanent hero and play through different campaigns and PvP games in the same way you might use battle.net. It could be an interesting prospect.

The key thing that gave me confidence is that the developers said they’d be using the HOMM III type battle system with the HOMM V graphics. If you’ve followed the game for any period of time you’ll know that mechanics wise it peaked at III and only went down hill from there. This is a very big “multi-player” game and when HOMM V released that feature just wasn’t there. In fact it didn’t make it until the first expansion, which is ridiculous! It was there that I swore off the games. They broke my heart and then ran off in Cuba.

An MMO, on the other hand, has to be multi-player! You can’t put your game online and not allow players to join up and experience it together! That prospect alone has me quite excited. There aren’t a ton of details yet but the company is holding a few beta key contests so with any luck I’ll get a shot at the game and be able to report back. I’m very excited about this but also guarded. The sting of HOMM V is still there!

Oh, you did not like HOMM V? :) Granted, HOMM3 was just… better. I simply adored HOMM3. I also like the recent King’s Bounty (~HOMM) remake by Katauri, a very well done game.

It is a browser game, and was in the making for years by now. Let’s see how it turns out.

I didn’t dislike it. I was just really miffed that it didn’t release with multi-player. I just couldn’t grasp how that happened. I mean… HOMM is a multi-player game!
