It has come to my attention lately that I talk about Epic Pet Wars quite a bit here. I do so because I really enjoy the game and probably play it more than anything else right now simply because it is right there on my iPhone. Ever so often I like to write “how to” guides for dungeons and the like so I thought it would be fun to do a primer on EPW. That way others can take what I’ve learned and have quite a bit more success when they first pick up the game. As always, if you decide to try it out you can friend me with the code kremolb and use the redeem code payssjeu.
Select your Pet
If you don’t purchase any of the Epic Pet War packs when you first download the game you’re limited to only a few pets. In general you’ll find that they’re all fairly balanced and most of the original ones don’t have any advantage over the other. For the min-max player I’ll give a brief explanation of the statistics but in all honesty your best bet is to pick the pet that you like to look at the most.
Attack – Attack influences how much damage you do with each melee attack. This is modified by your opponents defense and inflates incredibly quickly. I can’t really recommend basing your choice on attack because of that. Even 20 points difference early on won’t matter that much later on.
Defense – Defense reduces the amount of damage you take from melee attacks. It is compared to the attack value of the pet you’re battling. This is another statistic that inflates quickly but not as much as attack. I value it slightly higher in that regard but, in general, more attack is better than more defense. A defeated opponent can’t strike back and the attacker gets the first swing (a huge advantage).
HP – Your pet’s starting health is important early on but is also quickly inflated. Total health is very important to the game, however, so every little bit does help.
Energy – Energy is your ability to do jobs to gain experience and money. The more energy you have the more jobs you can do. Energy does not inflate very much so every bit of energy is important. The more energy you have the faster you can level. I highly recommend this statistic.
Mood – How your pet feels. This statistic is underutilized and basically meaningless. Keep it maxed but don’t worry about the starting total.
Energy Refresh – This is how often your pet renews a point of energy. As you might imagine this is a very important statistic. The faster you gain energy back the better. The average time is 300 seconds (five minutes) so anything better than that is an advantage.
Money Refresh – Money refresh refers to how often your pet’s investments get paid. That is right gang, your pet can have a portfolio! The more often it refreshes the more money you make and that is important, especially early on. The average is about 3600 seconds (60 minutes).
Health Refresh – Your pet loses health from battling only. Other than the boss pets you don’t have to battle but it is recommended. You can earn special items from battling and in general it is pretty fun. The average time for a health refresh is 300 seconds.
When you look at the various pets in Epic Pet Wars you’ll note that there isn’t a huge variance on the statistics I talked about above. You can succeed with any of them and I pretty much recommend picking the one that makes you smile. Otherwise, you have the information at hand to make a wise decision.
Your First Steps
When you first start your pet you’re going to make money from doing jobs. This should never be considered the primary method by which to make money. Your goal early on should be to complete tasks that offer the most experience per energy point. This is easily computed by dividing the minimum earned experience by the energy point required. This will allow you to level faster. At the same time you’ll make a little bit of money.
Initially, you shouldn’t worry too much about equipment as purchasing it on your early salary is difficult. Take all your money and buy as many of the first investments as you can. Do this until you reach 200 investments. Don’t stray into the more expensive ones just yet because they offer diminishing returns. Once you have 200 just sit on them for a bit and purchase gear that is appropriate for your level. With each new tier of investments try to replace your old 200 with your new 200. This generally ensures that your pet always has more money than it needs. Mine always has.
You also want to start working on your posse. Get your friend code and whore it out all over the internet! You can even leave it in a comment here. Many jobs and most bosses have a posse size requirement. If you don’t have a posse you just can’t get the job done!
Battling in Epic Pet Wars
Battling is when you want to go out and challenge another pet to a friendly fight. There are two general methods by which to do this: bottom feeding and challenge fighting. When you attack you already have an advantage since you play your pet and you attack first. The defender is computer controlled and doesn’t always make the best choices. If you really want to test your skills, you want to do a challenge fight. That means the pet you attack has a similar level and gear to your own. On the other hand, if you want to be assured a victory you can bottom feed. That means attacking a pet with inferior gear and possibly lower level.
From a strictly min/max perspective you want to bottom feed. There is absolutely no benefit at this time for fighting a pet that can defeat your pet. The experience gain doesn’t change, you don’t get more than one win and in general Epic Pet Wars doesn’t recognize it as harder. Challenge fighting is simply for those who want a little more thrill or don’t like the idea of bottom feeding. Always be aware, however, that if your gear is not up to speed for your level you will be the target of bottom feeders.
Epic Pet War Bosses
Bosses are special jobs that you occasionally have to do to progress. New jobs will not be available until you complete these tasks. While in the “training” section, a boss job is essentially just a fight with a super powered pet. It is generally best to fight them when you reach the top level possible for your tier and sometimes one or two after. Also ensure that you have the newest and finest equipment. Finally, you want to be certain to stock up on spells and/or consumables. I’ve had a lot of success with “debuff” items that reduce the boss’s attack and/or defense and raise my pets defense. This takes away their advantage.
Hopefully this short primer will at least get you started in Epic Pet Wars. The advice is pretty sound but there are certainly numerous other ways to play. Feel free to comment with some of your own!
