I always got particularly miffed during my time in WoW that players would get "honor" for killing you even if you weren't ready for it, and that the "penalty" for killing a clearly level-inferior opponent was "no honor". Not sure what school of thought this "honor" came from, but I always felt/wished two things...

1. Honor would only come if you challenged someone to a duel, they were equal level and ready for you, they accepted, and you beat them.

2. Dishonor would occur if you killed someone who clearly couldn't stand a chance (i.e. ganking)...and "dishonor" should have had severe impact, like "Your character is shamed!" and you can't do anything (enter instances, level up, get new gear) until you've attoned some how (a really annoying grinding quest would be my vote).

I just wrote a post on this very issue in response to a recent post of Tobold's. It pretty much applies here too:

The aspects of PvP I enjoy are working as a team, hopefully outnumbered, to achieve an end result against an even or larger foe. It's far more exciting than completing a dungeon which throws up nearly the same encounter every single time.

The teamwork, knowledge and leadership required to be succesful in Warhammer are some of its most awesome features, however moments like these a few and far between. I have not participated in WoW's Arena but from all reports its simply a FOTM event, and you will often encounter a team make-up that you may never be able to defeat. War suffers from this too, but from my experience to a lesser degree. Balancing for PvP seems impossible, if you look at it from an outsiders perspective.

How will a game ever provide this type of enviroment for me all the time? I guess only with instancing/scenarios/matchmaking systems - Warh will soon provide 2 of these options but without any matchmaking tools for its scenarios it will continually offer outbalanced and poor matchups.

I agree that PvE is the bread and butter and that some devs miss that. PvE is easier to balance too and you can pump out a lot more PvE content per hour of dev time than you can PvP.

It's a pity as I quite enjoy WAR and its PvP. I am coming to the realisation that WAR is likely the last AAA PvP game we will see in 5-10 years and I don't think people are going to realise what their missing till its gone.

I think the problem is that gaming companies are thinking dollars and cents; and not common sense. There are far too many games trying to fight for the almighty dollar. So, this is why they have opened the flood gates for PvP.

Most of the people that play PvP strictly are looking for Counter Strike with sticks and magic missiles, in my opinion. When you have a game that wants to balance with PvP and PvE on of the sides is going to lose because of balance or players whining.

I see people have referenced WarOnline and I guess I will go with that. I must say PvP has improved greatly but in some areas it is worse. Since Burn Wizards and Eng's complained about people being able to mitigate out there dmg Mythic decided to put in soft caps. These caps basically make it so you take more dmg when you go above the certain threshold.

This is good for people who cast but what about the melee? ALL classes can get about 80%+ melee mitigation, which is ridiculous. I understand casters should be able to blast, but it should be spike dmg. Also once the melee has gotten inside advantage they should be able to cut you to ribbons. This is where I get lost in PvP.

It would seem developers don't understand simple mechanics, which is: Melee is greater at close combat and Ranged is better...at oh wait...ranged. I must say that WarHammer is lacking quite a bit with melee dmg, since the majority can be healed out or armor stopped.

I also agree that people need to return to PvE. This is what builds cohesion I believe and makes people bond together. I know that sounds carebare, but I really think it is true. I like loggin into said game and playing and experiencing the game with my friends. I feel PvP strips away some of those bonds because it based solely on singularity not holistic.

I've always liked PvE. PvP never really did much for me - till I met EVE :)
I just got my ass handed to me several times over the last week by marauding pirates, and for the most part I enjoyed it.

With EVE, you know you're playing a PvP game. It has PvE elements, to keep the money coming in and whatnot - but there's no doubt that it's a full blown PvP game. In that setting I find I can actually enjoy PvP (though I'm not exactly great at it - yet). Mostly though, I want a PvE game with no PvP whatsoever.

If I buy a PvE game, that's what I want it to be.

Oh, and for the love of all that's holy - please make sure developers bring the wonder that is EVE's market with them into whatever game comes next.
I love being able to plan out little trading trips with the EVE API supported 3rd party tools that are out there when work is slow.
