The joys of discrimination

I picked up on this article today after lunch about a company avoiding the hire of WoW players. It appears as if their argument for this is that these applications will all have “irregular sleep patterns” and will be “unable to keep their mind focused on work.” Really? As far as I’m concerned that just described every human being I’ve ever met. Any entertainment activity could lead to both of those issues. I don’t see how WoW is anymore predisposed than television, family issues, dating, bowling or professional synchronize goose kicking (PSGK). Then again, this game is apparently one of the biggest reasons for college students to drop out. I can’t wait to find out next week that WoW is now responsible for 35% of all teenage pregnancies.

Once more we have scapegoating when it comes to the gaming industry. I’d go on a tirade about it but I think it is played out and I’m sleepy from my “irregular sleep pattern brought on by MMO Gaming stress. Gaming is growing in every age group and market. Many of us are active voters and very political. We do great things with our hobby (such as Child’s Play). We’re regular people but somehow we get stereotyped. So I’ll say this, “for shame employer.” If you took out the words “world of warcraft player” and put in “african-american or female” this would be an immediate lawsuit. I am not a sue happy person but I know when to call a goose a goose (and more importantly when to kick it). This type of behavior is inappropriate. Let the candidate stand on their own merits and not their gaming habits.
